Artillery Sidewinder X1 3D Printer

A full review of Artillery Sidewinder X1, a printer that offers a lot and gives exceptional print quality.

Artillery is a company with little time in the market, and this is one of its first printers, has a highly trained technical team, and shows them is the high quality of this printer.

One thing to emphasize is that the name Artillery has been changed to EVNOVO, to avoid confusion and clarify that both are the same printer.

PRO

  • Very silent printer, one of the quietest in the market.
  • Extrusion, thanks to Titan and Volcano clones, is precise and clean.
  • The heating glass bed.

CONS

  • The screws below the bed are on the smaller side; it makes leveling a bit difficult.
  • The printing surface has little to no adherence.
  • Heat dissipation is uneven.

Tech Specs

The Chinese company Artillery releases this competitive 3d printer, which features a sturdy frame, a glass bed, a color touchscreen, secure filament roller holder. Let’s look at all the technical specifications in more detail.

Design

The first impression is a very sturdy machine and sleek; this is because the main two pieces are ensembled, and the cables are not all over the place, giving a DIY vibe to the printer.

Ensembling the printer and starting to print shouldn’t take too long, and most people will be able to do it with the manual.

Cables

Unlike most 3d printers, this model includes the ribbon style cable, this keeps everything tidy and reduces the chances of riddled cables, the only issue with this cable is that is has been reported to break faster.

Maybe this is the reason Artillery includes a replacement ribbon cable; regardless, I suggest printing cable covers and strain reliefs; there are many free models you can find online.

Framework

The frame of aluminum profiles, and the X and Y axes with a broader width than what we see in most 3d printers.

It gives us greater stability and allows us to print at higher speeds without losing quality.

Bed

The bed is a porous ceramic coated glass surface and measures 300 x 300 x 400 mm, one of the main attractions is how fast the bed heats up.

The bed can reach 140°F or 60°C in less than a minute, the screen will let you see how fast it heats up.

Extruder

It includes a Titan and Volcano, although they are clones, and even when clones will not be as good as the original, it still is a plus compared to other extruder systems.

The extruding system is direct, which allows printing with flexible materials, besides the sturdy frame allows the printer to move fast without having vibrations, which gives a cleaner result.

Screen

The screen is a color touchscreen and measures 3.5 inches. It’s very intuitive; the display includes the following buttons.

  • Home
  • Heat
  • Move
  • Level
  • Change
  • More
  • Back

No bugs have been reported in the community so far, if you encountered any issue its easy to contact Artillery tech support via e-mail.

Connectivity

The 3d printer works with USB cable, USB and SD card, wifi is also available, but you must pay separately for the module and configure it.

Set-up

The box comes very well packaged and has a cardboard frame on all edges that gives greater rigidity to protect all parts. The pieces are placed inside black padding to keep them in place.

You see the guide of guidelines and user manuals; the organized box; these are the items included.

  • X, Z-Axis Frame
  • Base with the glass bed
  • Manual guide
  • Power cable
  • Filament roller
  • A carry-on bag with:
  • USB cable
  • USB with instructions and files
  • RGB module
  • Small plastic container with screws
  • Piece of black adhesive tape
  • Tools to build the printer
  • Replacement ribbon cable
  • Replacement pulleys

*The bed comes with a new protective film.

To build the 3d printer, just place the frame on the base and adjusting them using the tool with the four screws and nuts that come in the set.

As further advice I do not recommend tightening the screws too much when the frames are aluminum, you want to leave the firm but not too much to avoid warping.

Place the filament holder on the top frame with the screws and nuts that come in the set. Screw one side of the holder first and then place the other one, ensuring the right width with the filament roll and screwing it. Connect the filament holder sensor.

Connect all the cables following the instructions manual, also make sure the pulleys are not too loose. The same for the bed, adjust manually.

Usability

By far the quietest 3d printer in the market now, even with the extruder fan, it’s unbelievably quiet.

The system has a power failure detection and will resume printing after restoring the energy.

Is it worth it?

Yes, it is, I recommend this 3d printer for those with some experience with printers, as noted before the main issue are the ribbon cables, there is a workaround by printing your strain relief.

Regardless of those issues, this is an excellent printer with fast heating and superior printing quality.
